Position Dimensions: To assist the youth of Minneapolis to obtain a quality education, quality careers, and other meaningful life opportunities.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required; at least two years of teaching/counseling experience preferred;

  • MN Teacher’s License In English and/or Communication Arts – Secondary Education Level also Required
  • Must possess strong communication skills and be able to implement MN State Academic Standards for secondary students (grades 9-12)
  • Proven ability to work with youth in an alternative school setting
  • Ability to motivate and inspire youth
  • Firm commitment to providing service to traditionally underrepresented and/or marginalized populations
  • Ability to work well in a team setting, as well as to collaborate effectively with Educators from different content areas (team teaching)
  • Familiarity with Native American community, traditions, and programs.  Native American Preferred

Duties and

Responsibilities:

As a Life-work Plan Coordinato:r 

  • Serve as a point of contact for all life work planning, and counseling in the Career Immersion High School
  • Recruit employers, schools, and post-secondary program partners on behalf of the High School program
  • Assist with all required reporting
  • Provide effective orientation for all students and parents
  • Prepare students for post-secondary transition

As an Instructor

  • Prepare lesson plans for and deliver instruction within the field of English during routine High School hours
  • Provide additional instruction/tutorials in the AIOIC ABE/GED program (8 hours per week)
  • Help specify desired skill and competency levels according to MN Graduation Standards
  • Help develop interdisciplinary, applied and project-based curricula
  • Integrate academic and vocational teaching
  • Help develop and implement the workplace readiness curriculum
  • Explore workplaces and assess them for learning opportunities

For over 40 years, The City, Inc. has provided a variety of integrated, culturally sensitive services and programs to thousands of people living in some of the most poverty-stricken Twin Cities neighborhoods: Powderhorn, Phillips, Jordan, Cleveland, Webber-Camden and Hawthorne. The City School is an accredited alternative junior and senior high school with two locations (North and South Minneapolis) for inner-city youth who are struggling in the traditional school system. Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Teach individuals and small groups (5-6 students) in basic math, algebra and geometry.

  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects.

  • Work with staff to develop and evaluate individual learning plans designed to increase a student’s academic performance; identify areas of success and areas that need to be readdressed.

  • Maintain accurate and complete records required by district and The City, Inc. policy.

  • Ensure teaching license remains current.

  • Attend student/parent education related meetings, during and after school hours, as needed.

  • Attend staff meetings as needed.

 

Education and Experience Required:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Valid Minnesota math teachers license (grades 9-12)

  • Previous teaching experience preferred

  • Previous experience working in a diverse, multi-ethnic community is desired

 

Compensation: 

$20.00 an hour (15 to 20 hours a week)
